Softonic review

Mono

Mono is three horror stories wrapped up in one indie game. Each of the three stories will provide a piece of the underlying narrative that runs across the set. Currently, users have access to the first story, but the following two will be released as free updates in due course.

What's the deal?

Mono is about as indie as indie gets. A single person development team with a singular vision, limited resources and the dedication to make things happen. The first story has just recently been released and the reviews are positive. People are already praising the narrative style as well as the innovative use of game mechanics, used to create a creeping, terrifying atmosphere. While all three stories will have their own narrative thrust, the developer has confirmed that there will be an underlying narrative that runs through the series.

How indie is it?

Well, as we've said, it's a one man team and the development costs are minimal. Don't go into this expecting a Resident Evil 7 level of graphical polish. What Mono is is a vehicle for a unique narrative told by a passionate individual. The graphics may not blow you a way, but the atmosphere the developer has managed to create is impressive.

PROS

  • Great use of narrative to build atmosphere
  • Excellent use of available resources

CONS

  • Shows its low budget origins
  • Single platform release
